What is Reiki?
What is its history?
Little is known about the early origins of Reiki or where it came from, it was rediscovered in the 1800’s by Buddhist monk Dr Mikao Usui. He was teaching in a college when a student of his asked how Jesus performed his healing miracles. This prompted Dr Usui to set out on a quest to find the answer. His journey took him to many countries including the holy mountains of Kori Yama. There he attained a high altered state of consciousness by fasting and meditating for 21 days. He became enlightened by great spiritual energy bringing with it Reiki Ryoho, the ability to heal.
What is its purpose?
Reiki is mainly used to reduce stress and relax the body. It also helps to promote healing.
How is it performed?
Reiki is a spiritual force. Its power comes from above. It enters at the top of the head and flows through the body and out through the hands. Treatment is administered by the laying of hands. The majority of Reiki is performed flat although it can also be administered in a standing or seated position. The Reiki practitioner will place their hands either on or near the body in a sequence of hand positions, these will usually be around the head, shoulders, stomach and feet. Depending on the clients needs other areas may also be worked on. Each position is concentrated on for 3 to 10 minutes depending on the work needed for each area and the whole treatment usually lasts between 45 minutes to an hour and a half. The patient is fully clothed throughout.
What does it feel like?
This varies from client to client. In addition to a feeling of deep relaxation you should also feel a glow flowing through and surrounding, your whole body. During treatment you are encouraged to let go of all anxiety, tension and fear – this should bring about a sense of peace and calm and wellbeing. Some may feel almost like they are floating outside of their bodies. At the end of the session you should feel more refreshed, relaxed and be a lot more positive and balanced.
What are the health benefits?
Reiki can be used for many different things. It has been known to have a positive effect on all forms of ailments and illnesses from minor things such as stomach ache, head ache, cold and flu to other more serious illnesses such as heart disease and cancer. When having regular Reiki treatment side effects from treatment such as chemotherapy have been reduced which has meant a decrease in hospital time. Reiki does not come with a miracle performing guarantee, but it is known to help reduce stress and improve both physical and psychological wellbeing in clients.
